Exploring Montauban & the surroundings
Founded in 1144, Montauban is the oldest of the "new towns" of south-west France. A town of art and history built in pink brick on the banks of the Tarn, it is the birthplace of the painter Ingres and the sculptor Bourdelle. The historic centre is about 5 km from the hotel, at the gateway to the Quercy and the Aveyron gorges.
Place Nationale
The heart of the town, this 17th-century square is lined with double arcades of pink brick, unique in France. Cafés, terraces and a covered market hall (Tuesday to Sunday mornings).
Ingres Bourdelle Museum
In the former bishop's palace on the banks of the Tarn, the museum, renovated in 2019, holds the world's richest collection of drawings by Ingres and sculptures by Antoine Bourdelle, both born in Montauban.
Pont Vieux
A 14th-century brick bridge, 205 m long, that has spanned the Tarn for seven centuries. Fine views of the museum, quai Montmurat and the Villebourbon district.
Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption Cathedral
A rare 18th-century classical cathedral in white stone, built after the Catholic reconquest of the town. It houses "The Vow of Louis XIII", a large painting by Ingres.
Saint-Jacques Church & old town
A fortified 13th-century church with an imposing octagonal bell tower, medieval lanes, private mansions and hidden courtyards: follow the tourist office walking trails.
Jardin des Plantes & Port-Canal
An English-style garden on the banks of the Tescou, then a walk to Port-Canal and its open-air café, on the branch of the Canal des Deux-Mers.
Montauban markets
Large farmers' market on Saturday mornings on the allées de l'Empereur (nearly 190 producers) and Wednesday morning market on place Lalaque, in Villebourbon to be confirmed.
Montech and its water slope
A structure unique in the world (1974) that lets boats bypass five locks on the Canal des Deux-Mers. Museum, cycle rides along the canal and the Montech forest.
Moissac and its abbey
Saint-Pierre Abbey, a World Heritage site on the Way of St James: a carved Romanesque portal and a cloister with 76 capitals, a masterpiece of Romanesque art.
Bruniquel
A medieval village perched above the Aveyron gorges, overlooked by its two castles, the setting of the film "Le Vieux Fusil". A prehistoric cave famous for its Neanderthal structures.
Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val & the Aveyron gorges
A medieval town on the banks of the Aveyron, Sunday market, canoeing, climbing and the gorges road to Penne and Najac.
Lauzerte & Auvillar
Two of the "Most Beautiful Villages of France" in the Tarn-et-Garonne: Lauzerte, a hilltop bastide of the Quercy blanc, and Auvillar with its circular market hall above the Garonne.
Toulouse
The "Pink City": place du Capitole, Saint-Sernin basilica, the Jacobins convent, the Cité de l'espace and the banks of the Garonne. 30 minutes by train from Montauban.
Cordes-sur-Ciel
A hilltop medieval town in the Tarn, founded in 1222 and voted "favourite village of the French": cobbled lanes, Gothic facades and views over the Gaillac vineyards.
